I'm late to the party...but I'll add another option for you (for next year. Or when the urge strikes between now and then).

I make mine similar to your pecan version, but add nutmeg and cinnamon and a bit of milk. Sometimes brandy too. Or a squeeze of fresh orange juice. Mix the pecan in if you still want them (hit or miss here), then top with straight brown sugar and pop under

I use a very similar recipe to your pecan topping. But here's an amazing difference... I use milk instead of the reserves because it's REALLY creamy and amazing! Then, add 1 tablespoon of brandy to the mix. In the topping, add some nutmeg. You will be blown away at the difference here. Trust me, Dana, it's worth the try sometime! :)

We make something very similar to the marshmallow version. However, I don't mash the canned yam, I leave them whole. We add some extra spices to the crumble mixture and I also add a can of sliced peaches. Let me say the peaches make the dish! The are so sweet and yummy mixed with the yams. You should try it.

I use both! I smash my sweet potatoes, so they're still kind of chunky, AND I mix pecans in the filling as well as put them on top with the brown sugar and marshmallows. I can't decide if it qualifies as a side dish or dessert, either way it's delish.

I grew up with the pecans on top, I never knew anyone at them with marshmallows until I went to college and it was served in the cafeteria. I was a little horrified, lol. Anyway, I now make my mom's pecan version for my husband's family and they LOVE it too. Great idea using the immersion blender!

I've never heard of the pecan topping sweet potatoes, but that sounds super yummy. I have always made them fresh like your in-laws with maple syrup, sugar, butter, and orange extract, very simple. I will very much try the pecan topping and brown sugar. Thank you for the inspiration!!

I have gone to using an immersion blender (instead of beaters) when I make my sweet potatoes (I use a recipe very similar to this). I think the immersion blender makes a very light and fluffy texture and eliminates the "strings" that can occur with sweet potatoes. You can add some cinnamon and nutmeg to make them even more delicious.

We've always used the one with brown sugar topping! My recipe is a little different - we use milk and butter as well and no reserved or lemon juice. I've eaten the marshmallow one, but I don't like it much.

Your version is very similar to my Praline Sweet Potatoes. The main difference is mine starts by boiling cubed sweet potatoes. I've already made them three times since Thanksgiving. Yum!

That's so funny that you do both! In our house we had the "his vs hers" discussion too. I grew up with Marshmallows and he with pecans. My compromise now is to use both! Pecan crunch gets stirred in and marshmallows go on top. Oh. so. good. :)
