Thank you, Dana! I'm a novice, and a while back I made a pair of these kind of pants (sans kneepad) from a pattern. It was a Sew Easy pattern, but I thought it was Sew Hard, and the pants even fit all kinds of wrong.

Tonight I tried your tutorial and it was much easier. The jury is still out on the fit -- son is asleep -- but whether they fit or not, the tutorial is great!

Loooove this tutorial. Just made my first pair and mixed up the bottom and top of the pant (haha), but will try again. Just a question - my front and back pattern are pretty different - can I not just use the same shape and cut it out four times? (If this makes you laugh it may help to know that I've only ever made market bags - I'm feeling ambitious!). Thanks!

I haven't even finished my first pair of pants, but they already look awesome! I could never figure out how to sew the crotch so that it was easy to sew and reinforced. Sewing pants in this order allows me to get that strong seam.
Now I can make pants that fit my daughter's cloth diapered bum AND are long enough for her long legs!

I used some really ugly fabric with unacceptable designs to try and learn.
The waist is sometimes a problem, lots of tucks and gathers. Like you said, in the end you don’t see it at all.

Sorry you're having such problems with it! It's because of the curve that it tends to not lay flat. I usually just shimmy it around as I'm creating the waistband and try to get it to lay as "flat" as possible. Of course the waist will be gathered once you put the elastic in, so it's not a big deal if there are some gathers here or there as you sew it down.
