And about where they from i think from spain but before from arabins who came to Spain. I adore alfajores! My family is Peruvian and we also make them. We call the dulce de leche "manjar blanco" and my eighty-four year old grandmother still makes it the old fashioned way - whole milk, cinnamon sticks and sugar cooked on the stove all day until it cooks down to the thick consistency you described. These cookies don't last long at all for us!

The Alfajor of Spain, has Arabic origin, and is made with a base of almond, honey and cinnamon. The gingerbread from South America is an evolution of Spanish.
Currently consuming at Christmas along with "mantecados" and "polvorones", typical of southern Spain, Andalucia.
I will try this recipe, I find it very curious and delicious, mmmm!

I lived in Uruguay and they were a daily treat! There was a big argument about whether they originated in Uruguay or Argentina- but that's the same argument about everything. They're best "banados"- dipped in chocolate!

Dulce de leche is to sweet for me but once in a while I have one covered in thick chocolate:)

To have that creamy aspect of the condensed milk, I cook it with the pressure cooker for an hour. You just have to put the tin NOT OPENED cover with water into the pressure cooker. and you count 1 hour after it starts to shhh.... !!!

Those look really good! We lived in Chile for a year but I don't remember seeing alfajores. I do remember seeing Dulce de leche though. They sold it by the bag full in the dairy case.

alfajores are the most delicious cookies ever. when I was an exchange student, my Paraguayan mother baked those every single week, as a treat, just for me. rolling the sides in coconut flakes makes them even more yummy!!! thanks for this trip down memory lane...

My brother used to eat commercially-made alfajores on his mission in Uruguay and always sent the wrappers home in his letters. He brought a few home for us to try and they were delicious! You can also make dulce de leche (although without salt) by boiling (simmering?) the unopened sweetened condensed milk cans for awhile. Google it for specific directions.
