You know you're addicted to sewing when you've told your husband for 3 days straight that you REALLY are done sewing and ready to pack up your machines (since you're moving in ONE week)....and then you find a tutorial online that you just must try. And so you do. But this was just too adorable and too easy that I had to share it with you all!
Brought to you by a favorite site, Sparkle Power, Candace shares a simple tutorial for making this little top. I'm not kidding, YOU MUST TRY IT. It's the perfect nap-time or evening project.
Her measurements in the tutorial are for a 4T-5T. So....Here's what I did for a 2T-3T:
Shirt body: 30 in x 13 1/2 in (76 cm x 34 1/2 cm)
Sleeves: 14 in x 3 1/2 in (35 1/2 cm x 9 cm)
1 inch Elastic for body: 21 inches (53 1/2 cm)
1/4 inch Elastic for sleeves: 9 1/2 inches (24 cm)
These measurements could also be adapted to an adult size. Or, try using Made by Rae's fabulous Spring Ruffle Top Tutorial.
Candace recommends light-weight material and that is definitely key. But if you find yourself stuck (like I did), there's always a way to Make it Work! (Tim Gunn would be so proud). My sleeves where a little too stiff after I added the orange/yellow stitching on the sides. So I took my trusty elastic thread and sewed a few lines next to the orange (shown below) to help it ruffle more. Hooray for shirring!I also added buttons to the front, just for look. I need to move them over slightly though.

And after shooting these pictures, I was reminded of the picture of me below. It was taken 7 years ago after spending a week on a sailboat in Belize (in the Caribbean). I've never been so tan (or slightly red) in my life! Oh to be so free again. Those were some fun days. But I'd never ever trade them for my little beauty in front of her own green wall:
Now head on over to Sparkle Power for all the details. You'll be making this tonight.

Oh. my. gosh!!! this is adorable! I love your details,...the yellow & orange stitching & the buttons. oh my, why did i not think of buttons? So perfect. Thanks for posting your measurements as well. I will be linking for sure. good luck getting those machines packed up. hee hee.
YEAH! I have been eyeing off this tute too, and am very keen to give it a go. Yours is too cute, no wonder you keep itching to stitch. I love the gingham!
cute top. I just moved to IN from FL, so I need to learn to make long sleeves now!
I've finally got a little girl in mind to make this for! Very cute. I bet Goose looks just like you did at her age, right?
I love the buttons and a gingham and your little girl! They are super cute!Thank you for shering!
I love your top! Now I'm itching to make one.
sweet!!
Dana,
so I tried the men's shirt dress. COMPLETE failure. Threw it away. On the verge of screaming profanities. :) Ugh, I couldn't get the casing around the neck to work. My bobbin got all messed up and I feel like a large failure. I don't have a surger and I am hateful. I will try again, but I wish I were as talented as you. Maybe I will just stick with making my little guy the knee pad pants. Ok, all this raging has made me feel better. Good luck in Austin. They will love you!
Oh Dana I am so excited to make this tonight!!! yay!!
I think you need a family trip to Belize for another photo shoot with those beautiful bright colours. Goose is just beautiful and I adore your photography.
Good luck with putting that machine away and the adventure!

Okay, so you convinced me... not that it was that hard! Too cute and super simple. I know just the fabric I will be using to make this! Thanks for the tips on size too. It is so helpful that your bug and my boo are the same size. Seriously.
Just adorable!,...The top and the model!.... I will def be making one tonight....May have to adjust sizing again for 1-2T though. And I LOVE Belize....It is my country of birth after all!

daaaang girl you were dark!! great job on the top btw :)
Oh so cute! I love the orange contrast thread you used on the sleeves!
I just wanted to say that I love your photography! It's always one of the first I want to put on my flickr favs!
You had mentioned a studio in the comments of my last post. I have to say that it wasn't quite as expensive as you might have thought.
I mean, it wasn't cheap. But still less than I might have imagined. I bought 1200 watts of florescent light boxes but if you don't want to get that much, here's a really good place to start: http://www.cowboystudio.com/product/c04/p0401-07.php
It's a kit that includes 800 watts of florescent umbrella lights AND a backdrop stand with a black, white or green backdrop for only $223
Amazon has an excellent selection of backdrop paper for only $39 a piece (that includes shipping).

It is nice at times. I do like outdoor shots better but you know sometimes it's just not feasible. Especially with my daughter.
I really have to ask Chris to write a little computer program for me. A program that just automatically writes a "Dana, how cute is this again! And your little girl looks beautiful in her pretty new top. Thanks for sharing!" comment. Or something like that :-) Love it. As always.
That is a lovely top, I adore Sparkle Powers top as well. Great tutorial, and thanks for the adjusted age sizing!
I first saw that picture of you and though "wow," she cut her hair!
I do love that door and the trim color, but you probably already know I have a thing for turquoise.
you are amazing at taking pictures, amazing at thinking stuff up, and well just plain amazing. i'm so glad we got to *meet* ;) -VC
HI Dana,
I happily got some free time last night as the kids slept!

xoxo, K
Looks sooo cute! I'm going to have to try this one!
Dana,
I popped over from V and Co. to check out your blog and I gotta say you are a SEWING DIVA!! Your apparel projects of remade fashions totally rock. I don't sew apparel. I leave that up to my daughter. She does well with that. I like to quilt. But I could see trying this refashion stuff out on my twin nieces.
I will definitely be back to vist your blog.
Your little girl is sooooo sweet!
The shirt is adorable!
Really really cute. Love your blog! Her red shoes are the perfect choice for her new top. Good luck on your move.
adorable top
Did you increase the width of the sleeves? If so, by how much?
ps. I have never used elastic thread before. What do I need to know? Does it go on the bobbin as well?
Thanks!
Even when I have no time to spare at all, I never regret spending a while on your blog! This top is the cutest, and the little dresses and the sunshine shortie are just adorable - and cool! I have just been catching up, and I just love it all! :) Gotta sew soon!
You children are so good-looking! Love her smile!
This was so cute, I knew I had to try it! Check out the ruffle top that I made http://littlehandsbigblessings.blogspot.com/2009/09/i-ruffles.html
You and your daughter are just beautiful!
Pretty! Pretty! and that blue fabric is just perfect.
If I ever become a millionaire, I think I'm going to hire you to design all of my girls' clothes. ;)

Sewwww cute ;) I wish I knew how to sew better!! This is inspiring though!
awwwwwwwwwwww... how cute
Hie, how do we make ruffles? Thanks
Thanks again for this tutorial. I just finished my top/dress and it turned out great. The baby is asleep, so no picture with her in it, yet...
But I posted a picture on my blog. It is in Dutch, but has a translation tool.
O, one more thing, the size you gave for the sleeves is if you do not fold them. Otherwise it needs to be 14 x 7 inches.
Thanks again, you always give me tons of inspiration!
