Red, White, and Refashioned

Last week, while rummaging through a bag, I found this onesie I had purchased a year ago at an Old Navy clearance sale. Quite dreamy to find forgotten treasures!
Though it was a size 6-12 months (crazy), I cut off the bottom, added a skirt, and it became Goose's 4th of July dress:
Just a simple skirt of gathered muslin but embellished with plenty of girly ruffles.
Strips of mulsin were cut 2 inches wide, gathered in the middle and sewn right on top of the skirt. I wanted a frayed look so the edges were left raw...but a top-stitch was sewn around the edge of each ruffle so it can only fray so far, with each wash.
Similar to the onesie dress made last year, I like this look better. Guess I'm into ruffled strips of fabric lately?
We spent our lovely 4th of July weekend with both sets of grandparents, cousins, friends, and lots of festivities.
Since my sewing energy's been girl-central lately, baby brother wore his store-bought Rolling Stones tee...unlike his Red, White, and Disco outfit of last year (which was auctioned off in the NieNie auction. I hope the winner is enjoying it....and maybe your little guy wore it this year? If you happen to read my blog, I'd love to hear!)
Sorry little Owen. One of these days I'll cater to the boyish trends.
Happy 4th of July! We feel very blessed to live in a wonderful country. Three cheers for the red, white, and blue.

Her little 4th of July ruffle dress is to die for! Isn't it funny she could still wear a 6-12 month something on top? It's funny how that happens. Fabric stretches and still looks dang cute. Great job!!

PS I have a 3 year old boy and a 1 year old girl and I only sew for my daughter and rarely for my son. Something about it is so much more fun! And dresses are easy. Don't feel bad.

I'm not sure if I'm in more disbelief that you've made another adorable outfit, or that your 3-year-old fits into 6-12 month-sized tops!!!!!

It's so cute. I may need to make one in my size. :)

Sweet girly. I like the way it turned out. But how are you going to keep it white?? I have lots of girl-centered sewing ideas, too, but I just keep pushing them back or else my nieces would get spoiled and my boys would get nothing.

I have that exact same onesie sitting in my basket for future baby gifts. I want to do this same thing. Maybe I will add a little skirt to it and give it to a friend who is having a girl. I love your refashion. And, yeah, sorry Owen it's going to be your day when you get a totally great outfit like your sister.

I've kicked myself for not buying my daugher a certain onesie from Old Navy when she was little . . . and now I'm kicking myself for not seeing the possibilities past a onesie. Thanks for the idea spark - I linked to this on my weekly roundup here.

I'm so sold on those ruffles! I made a skirt with one row last year, but I think I'll add more as it looks so fantastic.!

Shimmy Shake said...

ou are right, that skirt does look like "shimmy shake" - and by the looks of it she may be doing a lot of shimmy shaking in it! Such an adorable dress, well done!

Thanks for your well wishes - and I tell you I am able to do more blog reading than sewing, that's for sure!
