A customer asked me to make a monogrammed skirt for her 7-year-old daughter Emory, out of this great Amy Butler fabric:
So I made a simple gathered, tiered skirt.
It needed some extra fringe so I made this and sewed it on top of the seams (double-layered, 1/2 inch wide cotton fabric, gathered in the middle and left with raw edges so it will fray as it's washed) :
She wanted an "e" on the skirt like the ones I've made for my Lucy. But when all was said and done, it felt overboard to add a letter to the skirt. So....I made a personalized purse/bag instead. What 7-year old wouldn't like a girly tote?
And every bag needs a pocket for lipgloss, hairclips, and candy of course:
The "e" was made in similar fashion to my Christmas ornaments. And I used more of the fringe above to make it feel girly. Kind of reminds me of a contest ribbon from the school science fair.
Enjoy your new treasures little Emory.(and p.s....a similar skirt tutorial is in the works!)

I love the bag! Do you have a tutorial, or did you make it from a pattern? I need something like that for church.
Adorable!! Nice job! The "e" is perfect on the tote.
I love the idea of personalising the tote bag - so cute. I'm sure Emory will love it!
The skirt is lovely, but I love the letter technique for the tote! So simple and a great way to enjoy a bit more fabric :)

I love the skirt. What a great idea to add the ruffled cotton. I also like the cut of the skirt. The bag is of course adorable too. Your ideas are always so cute.
Thank you for the sweet comments.
I didn't use a pattern for the bag, but I'm sure there's one out there. Maybe I should work one up in the future....
(now you've got the wheels spinning). I will say that there's a skirt tutorial in the works. Hopefully up some time this month.
are you going to do a skirt pattern like that one? or like your monogrammed skirt? I can't wait!!
Simply adorable! I'm sure she's going to love them both!

This bag is beautiful!!!
I'm from hungary.
Great compromise by still giving your customer her "e" and you being happy with what you made. The skirt and bag are beautiful.
I love that bag... especially with the monogram letter! What a fun idea!
I am in LOVE! That skirt is so cute and the monogramed bag is fantastic. I am always looking for cute way to use monograms because I have identical twins. I thrifted a valance very similar to the one you used in the first skirt and now I know just what I am going to do with it. Thanks!
My daughter would love this - I love love love the skirt!
