After the bright colors of the Mercado Skirts, this little piece feels more like June Gloom. But my Goose loved it nonetheless. "Let's wear it all day long," was her response. Made of slate blue cotton and lavender tule, this is a revamp of the Orange Bird skirt (inspired by this skirt from Pink Pickett Fence).
While the orange version was bright and fun....it wasn't executed quite right. And it's been bugging me for months (each time I see it in her drawer and decide that it's too crocked and bubbled for her to wear). So, I gave it another go. This time I made a 4-tiered, gathered skirt (similar to many of the skirts here on the blog). I gathered the tulle a little tighter this time and sewed it on with contrasting green thread.
HUGE NOTE for the future: Sew tulle on LAST, not first. Would have been SO much easier to make the skirt without that bulky frill in the way.
I do love the updated look, but.....I'm still not satisfied. I've decided that tulle is too stiff for such a simple cotton skirt. So, I ordered some nylon chiffon from this great place today! Something a little softer might do the trick.
This bird hasn't migrated yet....

I love the color!! So cute!
Sheesh this is G*O*R*geous!!!! As you're not completely satisfied, you may as well pass this skirt on to me, as I have a fiery little redhead that would look RAVISHING in that gorgeous color combo. ;)
(BTW, I saw the version that Gap or whoever came out with that inspired this, and you've so totally surpassed it. Amazing work. Well done.)
I can see why your daughter was eager to wear this skirt...it is adorable!! I tried to emulate the orange skirt that you made and pink picket fence's pink skirt, and I was not satisfied with the end results. I would be very interested in a tutorial. I love this new tiered option. I love the color! I look forward to seeing the chiffon option!
Dana it's just beautiful!!!! I think you're right it's a huge improvement on the orange bird skirt, I can't wait to see the next one!
Oh, she must feel like such a princess! Yay!
Adorable! I love the color. You are so amazing, it astounds me. Such a creative mind you have. You are an inspiration. How do you find time to sew?! My four kids are a time drain. Maybe I just need to learn to sew faster. :)
Ooooh I love this skirt! And the color is beautiful. You're right, totally matches the June glooom...buuuut makes me much happier than those dumb clouds.
It is so beautiful Dana! I love it. I think I will make this one for my little one!
looks beautiful to me!!!!!
I didn't think it possible, but you have made me love June Gloom even more!!!!
Seriously, Dana, you're making me want to have a girl or start dressing the boys in your gorgeous wares! (word verification? inapp. for inappropriate? yes, neither of my boys should wear a purple bird skirt, no matter how much I love it!)
The color is really unique. I love it. I also did the one from pink picked fence and wasn't totally satisfied either. So I'm glad you're giving some updated tips. I might have to try it again.
ooh! pretty. i love it. the subdued colors are really cool -- and i love anything with ruffles & tulle :) shoot, i'd wear a skirt like that.
I think it's totally and completely adorable! I love the colors, and would be happy to take it off your hands should you find it just sitting in a drawer in the future!
I tried one of these for Mallory with a green skirt and dark pink tulle. It turned out okay, but I can't get the girl to wear it which is actually okay because it really looks more like a dress up outfit than something she can wear. I hope your chiffon works. The colors of this blue one are fantastic. And, I hope your June gloom fades soon!!!
I think the color palette is great! I like it!
Can't wait to see what you make next my dear :)
Oh, for pete sake, you have GOT to stop making cute things because it only makes my "Projects-that-Dana-made-&-I-must-try-to-make-as-well" list too long.
this one, I think, is my favorite of all. I think you're right--chiffon would be perfect.
I love it! My daughters would too! I love the way the purple tulle and blue skirt work together...giving a sort of tie dye look:)
That skirt is really very lovely! Thanks for sharing, very inspiring!
Cute, as always. And I think a congratulations is in order for getting on Grosgrain's flickr favs!
Wow, I love that skirt - looks so lovely! I would love to make my little one a tulle skirt, but alas sewing is currently on the back burner....one day soon!
I adore that skirt! Bother my girls, I want to make one for *me* - darn it all, I need that sort of fun in my life :)
The colours are just glorious, and the skirt is stunning - you are so talented.
Soooo cute!!
This turned out really cute--love the color combo, but also love the original orange one.
And MAN, tulle is such a pain to work with!!! More power to you...
That is really cute and I like the color too. YOu and your family are so cute and I love her nick name - goose. PS I live in S. CAl too! (:

It's beautiful the color with the tulle makes it very elegant. I'm excited to see what your chiffon will look like. But I'm partial to tulle because I used to be a ballerina and I dreamed of tulle tutus.
Too Cute!

OH MY HOLY COW!!!!!!!!!! I want to order one of these NOW. I know you aren't satisfied, and when you are because you know best. A MUST HAVE!
The dress is cute but can I say how much I love the dirty feet in the picture? It captures a girls childhood perfectly.
the color is so perfect, I just love it!
Oh! I was going to say congratulations about your cute picture on grosgrain!
I saw the orange one and it inspired me for a dress I made last month (but I haven't put it on my blog yet because it was a gift). I love this one more: color and pattern are beautiful!!!
Stunning!!! I cant imagine how you could improve on this.
This is SO pretty!! I love it!! This is one of my favorites of yours!!
I made a red and white version for the 4th of July (along with a blue appliqued star shirt). SO CUTE!! I think my little one might need a June Gloom version too...so fun...so simple. I love it!!!
LOVE IT!!!
i adore this skirt!
I don't think it looks like June gloom at all! Great, it's nice seeing little girls in something other than pink. My daughter loves pink and wants to wear pink every day.
Gorgeous, gorgeous. I love that color. I think it's perfect for June, like lilacs.
I love, love the little tulle skirt! Do tell...did you gather the tulle first and then sew it on? I'm making one for my little neice and couldn't get the tulle to gather on the pratices pieces...is there a secret?
Hi Debra,
yes, gather the tulle BEFORE sewing it on to the skirt. I gather tulle similar to the gathering idea mentioned in The Market Skirt Tutorial. Change your machine tension to the strongest setting and change the stitch length to the longest stitch and then sew a line down the middle. It should gather real nicely!
